HPHT—High Pressure, High Temperature. HPHT is where the undisturbed bottom hole temperature at prospect depth is greater than 300°F (150°C). These conditions might be found in Geothermal, in situ Kerogen, Volcano power (Newberry Volcano in Deschute National Forest is 600°F and up), and deep hot oil and gas wells. However, it is at Ultra HPHT where Computatest technology stands alone. The record using Computatest technology currently stands at over 600°F at the Coso Geothermal complex in the China Lake Naval Air Weapons Station. More information on Coso here. Shadravan and Amani take Ultra HPHT to 600ºF. Recently, a major oil company announced plans to drill in excess of 30,000 feet below the mudline on the continental shelf of the GOM. The drilling environment at these depths will be ultra high pressure (approaching 30,000 psi) and extreme high temperature (> 600°F or 316°C) (Ohme, 2007). “The single biggest obstacle for electronic data acquisition systems in very deep wells is the HT encountered at great depth. Commercial electronics are not designed for these temperatures, and conventional integrated circuit (IC) technology is not capable of operating at these temperatures.”
